I AM

“Be still, and know that I am God…” Psalm 46:10a

My daughter is almost 3 years old and is VERY verbal and somewhat sassy.  Hmmm, I wonder where she gets that from! Anyway, nothing gets past her.  She notices everything and has taken to questioning every change she notices.  Her most amusing phrase lately, in typical toddler speak, is “what you do that for?”  The funniest part is the accompanying facial expression: eyebrows knit together, as if to say “I normally understand everything but this is puzzling and I don’t like puzzling.”

I love how God shows us ourselves with humor instead of harshness.  I chuckled quietly because I saw myself in her in that moment.  There have been a lot of puzzling circumstances going on in my life lately so I’ve been questioning God saying “what’s this about,” “why are you allowing this” and “what are you going to do about that?”  It happens whenever I take my eyes off of Jesus and His faith-building work at the cross to look at the circumstances around me which are incomprehensible from my vantage point.  As much as the Lord shares with me, His thoughts and ways remain so much higher than mine that I just have to accept seasons of cluelessness as part of the faith walk.  It’s doable as long as I remember He hears all my questions, He already knew all the answers and it’s all working together for my good!

That said, He didn’t scold me for having questions or feeling anxious. His simple, loving response to me: “relax, I AM and I’ve got this.”
