In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus poured out His anguish over the coming suffering to the point of sweating drops of blood (Luke 22:44). It was a cup of suffering He had serious second thoughts about drinking! Yet there was a joyful anticipation by which He endured the cross, despising its shame (Hebrews 12:2). He completely consumed that cup of suffering, declaring so with the words “it is finished” (John 19:30).
What was this joy?… I wonder if it was the joy of giving. After such indescribable suffering, He knew He could give righteousness, peace and joy (Romans 14:17) to all who believed in Him. It was a bitter cup for sure but somehow, to Him, it was also good till the last drop!
