Labor of Love 2

“Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” John 15:2

So we know the heart of the vinedresser, DADDY God.  He lovingly cares for His children, patiently looking forward to our fruitfulness.  What does this care look like?  From the looks of it, it involves separation and pruning.  Doesn’t sound romantic (see part 1), but it is.

Takes away.  Sounds like punishment for not being fruitful, but it’s not.  You have to get out your Bible concordance to find the meaning of these words in the Greek.  The word translated in the New King James as “takes away,” more specifically means lift up, elevate.  Have you seen a vineyard?  Vines naturally run along the ground unless they’re elevated and hung on something.  Without that elevation, the branches wither and rot; impossible conditions for fruitfulness.

Since Jesus is the true vine, hung on a cross and crushed for our freedom; that’s what our lives hang on.  When we drop our gaze from that cross, don’t remember, or don’t understand what He accomplished for us there, we’re unfruitful.   DADDY God, through the Holy Spirit, simply points us back to the cross.  The evidence of the love which caused Him to send Jesus in the first place.
