Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, else they will not come near you. Psalm 32:9
How many times do we embark on something without a full understanding of the matter? In all fairness, most of us think we know what’s going on, and approach the issue with the best of intentions. This verse compares people who operate based on anything other than the Lord’s understanding to a stubborn horse or mule. They only course-correct and seek God’s counsel after experiencing pain on their current path. It reminds me of an idiom I’ve heard my dad say often, “Those who can’t hear, will feel.”
As a sheep in Jesus’ sheepfold, be assured. You can always hear His voice (see John 10:27).
A prayer:
DADDY God, I know there is safety and blessing in following Your instruction and teaching. You’ve given me Jesus, the Good Shepherd, to lead me by His Holy Spirit. Help me be sensitive to His voice, and to trust His perfect understanding above my own. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
