Did You Hear That?

Surprised to see another post from me?  Not more than I!  I’m back because I noticed something after I posted Monday, that I couldn’t ignore.

Of course, it does, and so do the people who fall around us.  JESUS hears the fall.  He’s always around.

For all that’s said about social media and online communities bringing people together, I have to say, I don’t know that I’m buying it.  Monday, I received a blogger’s latest post.  For the second time in a row she expressed depression, this time in a sketched self-portrait.  Her atypical vulnerability struck me, so did her ‘comments’ and ‘likes’ section.

How is it that she eked out two posts in a row sharing her extended bout with depression, yet only a literal handful of people responded to her (out of her hundreds of followers)? I’m just asking, because it grieved me.  Has the noise of this world calloused our ears?

And, no, just clicking “like” isn’t a response, except to say, “I missed your pain because I wasn’t paying attention.”

There’s GREAT value in blogs and I dabble in social media, but nothing replaces human connection through the 5 senses.   To hug flesh and bone, look in a friend’s eyes, or hear a caring voice over the phone; there’s nothing like it.  But, if by chance, the “fallen” can only cry out over the world-wide web, I hope we hear their sound, care to connect, and point them to Christ’s love.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28-30
