Lois’ Legacy

Lois’ Legacy.  It’s the name of the, now defunct, Facebook page formerly attached to this site.  It’s the inspiration behind the former name of this blog, The Legacy of Faith.  More importantly, it encapsulates the testimony of a woman briefly mentioned in 2 Timothy.  And there’s nothing former about her impact on me.

I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.
2 Timothy 1:5, NLT

We hardly know anything about Lois, yet we know all we need to know.  She believed.  She believed God and in the work of His Son, Jesus.  She believed. When things seemed possible and not.  She believed.

The Bible doesn’t say her faith was pretty and flawless, that it never faltered.  But we do know it remained. Though her faith put to the test, seemingly sinking down to nothing.  Faith in Christ Jesus can’t be suppressed for too long.  Like air, it always finds a way to escape and surface.

Her daughter, Eunice, had to see it.  She saw how many times her mother had to hope in the Lord for something unseen with the naked eye. And then she saw God’s faithfulness in honoring her mother’s faith.  That’s how Jesus won her heart, not in the amount of faith, but in honoring faith placed in Him.  And so we have a third generation, Timothy, with that same beautiful, stubborn faith.  And the great Apostle Paul traces it all back to Timothy’s grandmother, Lois.

Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being certain of what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1, NIRV

Motherhood is no light thing.  It’s a series of believing for what you haven’t yet seen, in your children and in yourself.  Some days it’s easier to flow in faith than others.  Some of you have mothers, like Lois, who sowed precious seeds of faith of which you’ve gleaned and sown again.  Some of us sit at Jesus’ feet, clueless and from scratch, needing Him to make us into the “Lois” for our children and grandchildren.

Wherever you are on your journey, Mother, keep using your faith. Because like you, your faith means so much to so many.
