“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Hebrews 8:12
Do you remember the movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark?” The outside of the ark, Indiana Jones searches for, is a replica of the Old Testament ark of the covenant. The biblical ark of the covenant contained the Ten Commandments and symbols of man’s inability to keep it under the Old Covenant (see Exodus 25:10-21, NIV). Covered by the mercy seat, it was kept in the Most Holy Place, seen only by the High Priest (see Hebrews 9:7). That ark hinted at a better one to come.
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 4:10
Under the new covenant, Christ has become our propitiation or mercy seat. His blood did what no animal’s blood could do: pay for and remove the remembrance of our sin from His Father’s eyes forever.
But Christ…Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. Hebrews 9:11-12
When our mind plays tricks on us and we start trusting in our thinking or abilities, it’s like lifting Jesus out-of-the-way so we can reach into “our box.” What’s the harm in tinkering around, having a go at “getting it right this time?”
Do yourself a favor and leave… it…closed.
We really did need a Savior; we still need Him every day, and He’s quite happy with His role. Besides, anything God finished dealing with certainly isn’t anything we should fool with either. Let’s be content with the blood-stained cross, our mercy seat, where Christ finished the work. And let’s live life enjoying God’s grace!
