He Still Needs Me

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.  John 14:26

Well, it’s no secret that my beloved oldest child has also been my most challenging.  He’s strong-willed for sure which has taken on new meaning since he turned 10.  The funky attitude, the increasing need for solitude AND the stubbornness left me thinking that he didn’t need me as much as his younger siblings.  Recently, I realized I was mistaken.

We finished school early and since my husband had taken off work, I took the opportunity to run a couple of errands.  Normally, I use that as much-needed “me time”, but this particular day I felt the need to take one child with me for one on one time.  It was my oldest’s turn and I must admit I thought twice about it.  Don’t get me wrong, he’s a loving boy the majority of the time but his rough start this school year drained me.

Still, I couldn’t shake the nudge from the Holy Spirit to take him along.  Once in the car, my son turned and asked why I brought him.  Smiling, I replied, “Why not?”   At our first stop, my tall 10-year-old surprised me by taking hold of my hand…in public!  We talked about school and his football season thus far and genuinely enjoyed each other.  What really got me was his comment later, on his way out the door with my husband.  Along with a kiss and hug he thanked me for spending time with him!

Intellectually I knew that children need their parents even MORE as pre-teens and teens, though they act just the opposite.  This experience was a great reminder and a sweet one at that.  Yes, he’s getting older.  Yes, he’s quite contrary sometimes.   And yes, his hormones are rising …Lord Jesus!  BUT he still needs love and attention from his mama…and I thank God for keeping me in tune with my baby.
